Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner magnifies the lingering “poison” of royal blood in his upcoming Amazon anthology series, The Romanoffs. The network previewed the eight-episode project with its intriguing new trailer, which previews an all-star cast featuring Aaron Eckhart, Amanda Peet, Diane Lane and Mad Men alumni Christina Hendricks, John Slattery and Jay R. Ferguson.
The clip serves as a montage of scenes from the full series, jumping across seven countries as it highlights the drama of people who believe themselves to be descendants of Russian royalty. “There are so many people out there with your background. And I guess they’re proud, but they’re really fucked up,” one character says. Another warns, “You’d think that royal blood dilutes over time. But the poison survives.”
Weiner created, wrote, directed and executive produced the series, which presents a new location and cast with each episode. The first two installments will premiere Friday, October 12th, with subsequent episodes rolling out weekly on Fridays. The original version will debut in over 200 countries and territories, with dubbed foreign language editions following in early 2019.
Eckhart, Marthe Keller, Inès Melab and Louise Bourgoin co-star in the first episode, “The Violet Hour”; the second piece, “The Royal We” stars Corey Stoll, Kerry Bishé, Janet Montgomery and Noah Wyle.
Additional cast members for the series include Isabelle Huppert, Jack Huston, Andrew Rannells, Mike Doyle, JJ Feild, Paul Reiser and Kathryn Hahn, among others.
The Romanoffs reunites Weiner with numerous members of the Mad Men creative team, including producer Blake McCormick, executive producer/writer Semi Chellas, consulting producers/writers Andre Jacquemetton and Maria Jacquemetton, director of photography Chris Manley and costume designer Janie Bryant.
