Charlie Puth reveals he ‘tried to help’ rapper Mac Miller get clean

They became friends after sharing the same personal trainer.

And now Charlie Puth has revealed his upset over the death of Mac Miller – saying he wishes he could’ve ‘saved’ the late rapper.

The 26-year-old, from New Jersey, became choked while chatting about his deceased pal on Sunday.

"We talked almost every day and I don’t get a lot of friends who come into my life who I hit it off with so quickly," he told E! .

"I had known him for about six months, but we became really close, we became really good friends and I always thought I’d be the one to help him get clean and to lead him onto the path of a good, clean, sober life."

Sadly, that vision never manifested after Miller was found dead in his LA home, last week. Although the cause of death has not been confirmed, it’s assumed to be drug-related.

That alone causes Puth to feel regret.

"Every time someone close to me passes away I always text their phone and —I don’t know why I do this often — I just wrote, ‘I love you man,’ and I knew he wasn’t going to write back but I just felt like I had to do it anyway."

He added: "He was one of a kind, there was no one like Mac."

Miller – who was reportedly heart-broken over his split from Ariana Grande – was also struggling with a high-profile legal battle in the weeks before his unexpected death, last Friday.

The performer had previously been charged with two misdemeanors following a hit-and-run in May: driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol concentration limit over .08.

His arraignment was scheduled for 11 September, which means he would’ve been expected to appear in court with legal representatives on Tuesday.

There, he’d be asked to submit a plea in response to the charges. If convicted he faced up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

It’s not clear how he would’ve formally responded to the charges, but fans fear the mere prospect had been torturing the performer, who’d previously spoken of his anxiety.
