A commercial bus crash in New Mexico has left multiple people dead and more than 30 others hospitalized, according to officials.

Police say a Greyhound bus carrying 47 passengers slammed into a semi-truck while traveling westbound on Interstate 40 near Thoreau.

Cell phone footage captured at the scene shows the shocking aftermath.

Cargo from the semi can be seen scattered across the highway as firefighters and first responders attempt to get inside the mangled up bus.

New Mexico State Police reported “multiple” fatalities on Twitter, but didn’t say how many. Local hospital officials in Gallup told KOB4 that they had received 37 patients and were expecting six more, three of whom are in critical condition.

“There are multiple serious injuries and passengers transported,” cops said. “Officers and EMS are still working this scene actively.”

The crash unfolded around 1 p.m. Thursday as the bus was making its way to Phoenix from Albuquerque. The injured are being treated at Gallup Indian Medical Center.
