Why Messi refused to sign fan’s shirt after Barca’s win over Real Valladolid

Lionel Messi has made no secret of his desire to return to boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys before hanging up his boots.

And it was his love for the Argentine side that saw him refuse to sign a shirt for a supporter at the airport following Barcelona’s win over Real Valladolid.

Newell’s contest one of the most fierce derbies in South America against Rosario Central.

One cheeky fan wearing a Central shirt tried to get Messi to print his autograph on it, but the Barcelona legend was understandably having none of it.

The fan reportedly called Messi "pecho frio", which roughly translates as "passionless".

On a potential return to Newell’s, Messi told ESPN: "I would love to [return]. "It is something I have kept an eye on because it was my dream as a child.

"Obviously my life started to change and went another way, but I have no regrets.

"It’s something I have kept an eye on. I want to play in Argentine football and Newell’s, where I grew up."

Messi scored twice as Barca saw off Deportivo Alaves in their La Liga opener before the 1-0 win at Valladolid.
