Shawn Mendes was showcased as one of the trio of stars featured in Variety‘s annual “Power of Young Hollywood” Issue. In the interview that accompanies Shawn’s cover story, the Canadian pop singer talked about his influences (Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, John Mayer, Elton John), using his platform for the causes that he supports, and the directions that he’d like to take his entertainment career in the future.
But he also talks about dating … or the lack of it in his life.
On dating, Shawn told Variety
I’m not currently dating anyone, but it’s not because I don’t have time — I don’t know if I’d be dating anyone if I was home in Pickering [Shawn’s hometown in Ontario], either. It hasn’t stumbled across me, and I’m not chasing it. Of course, seeing all those other artists and people in relationships, you think, ‘Maybe it would be nice; who would be great for me?’ And that’s when you realize: ‘This is wrong. Let it be. I’m not supposed to be with anyone right now.’”
Close friend (and once rumored crush) Camila Cabello sort of ratted Shawn out to Variety as a workaholic:
When we were on tour together, I never saw him … He would go to his tour bus and practice guitar, then go onstage, and then go back and practice guitar. He’s the most dedicated, driven person I know.”
Maybe realizing how weird his statement in his interview about dating might sound, Shawn took an opportunity, at an event hosted last night by Variety to promote its “Young Hollywood” issue, to try to clarify his statement with a reporter from Extra. “I didn’t mean it like I have to be single,” Shawn said. “I meant love isn’t something you should chase because then it isn’t real, so you have to just kind of let it happen.”
We have the video Variety published to accompany Shawn’s interview, as well as Extra’s video with Shawn trying to dance around the fact that he has no interest in dating, below.
