A teacher could be struck off after he reportedly called one of his pupils ‘a poofy jew’ during a PE lesson.
Darren Marr has been accused of ‘putting a bowl on top of the boy’s head’ and making the anti-semitic remark during a PE lesson in 2014, reports the Daily Record.
Marr – a teacher turned fitness guru – was also accused of ‘slapping the student over the head’ during the incident at Inveralmond Community High in Livingston, Scotland.
He appeared at Livingston Sheriff Court in 2015 over the remarks and was found not guilty of assault.
The charge of racially aggravated conduct was not proven.
Now the General Teaching Council of Scotland (GTCS) are investigating the accusations to determined whether Marr’s ability to teach is impaired.
At the GTCS hearing in Edinburgh yesterday, Marr admitted making physical contact with the boy but denies making the anti-semitic and homophobic remarks.
He also admitted contacting a staff member while suspended to ask them to contact pupils on his behalf over the incident.
Donna McMaster, who was headteacher at the school at the time of the incident, told the panel that Marr should have “known better".
She added: “It was inappropriate and unprofessional. Placing a bowl on the pupil’s head is not acceptable.”
In a statement made by Marr during a probe at the time by West Lothian Council, he said the
physical contact was a “gentle coax”.
