John Goodman Became ‘Very Depressed’ After ABC Canceled The ‘Roseanne’ Reboot!

The cancellation of Roseanne hit John Goodman like a ton of bricks.

In a new interview with The Times, the Emmy-winning actor revealed he was “broken-hearted” when ABC axed the newly revived show following Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

While he tried to let it go, Goodman, who played Barr’s onscreen husband Dan Conner for 10 seasons, said that the show’s cancellation affected him more than he’d like to admit — and actually put him in a month-long depression.

He admitted:

“I thought, ‘OK, it’s just show business, I’m going to let it go.’ But I went through a period, about a month, where I was very depressed. I’m a depressive anyway, so any excuse that I can get to lower myself, I will. But that had a great deal to do with it, more than I wanted to admit.”

As for what will happen to the characters on the show, which is re-titled as The Conners and will be moving forward without Barr, Goodman says his onscreen counterpart will likely be just as depressed as he was:

“It’s an unknown. I guess be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.”

Barr is dead to the franchise too, so to speak. She signed a deal to relinquish rights and any financial gain from the rebooted series earlier this year.

Goodman said he emailed the comedian to thank her for signing the deal, but says he has not yet heard back from her. He offered:

“I did not hear anything back, but she was going through hell at the time. And she’s still going through hell.”

Yes, we’ve seen her YouTube “talk show.”

Despite what the internet thinks of Ro-Ro’s controversial tweet, Goodman believes she’s not a racist and was “surprised” ABC pulled the plug so quickly:

“I was surprised. I’ll put it this way, I was surprised at the response… And that’s probably all I should say about it. I know, I know, for a fact that she’s not a racist.”

We know, we know — it was the Ambien.
