Steve Gerrard has added Newcastle’s Rolando Aarons to his list of Rangers targets ahead of Friday’s Scottish transfer deadline.
Rangers are battling with Hull City and Greek side AEK Athens to land the 22 year-old winger.
Aarons spent last season on loan in Italy’s Serie A with Hellas Verona.
But with Newcastle having Kenedy, Matt Ricthie, Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu as wide options boss Benitez is willing to let Aarons leave temporarily again.
Meanwhile, Gerrard insists his side can win the Scottish Premiership title even if they lose all four Old Firm derbies to Celtic.
The two sides meet on Sunday after Rangers negotiate a Europa League play-off second leg against FC Ufa in Russia on Thursday night.
Gerrard said: “I haven’t even thought about the Old Firm game – I’m not obsessed with Celtic.
“I’m obsessed with being successful as the Rangers manager. I could lose every Old Firm game and still win the league.”
