John McCain’s life in pictures: A Vietnam POW, presidential candidate, senator, family man and true American patriot through the decades

  • John Sidney McCain III, died aged at his home in Hidden Valley, in Sedona, Arizona, at 4.28pm on Saturday
  • Photos dating back to the 1970s depict the late Republican senator’s life in the military and in politics
  • While serving as a pilot in the Vietnam War, he was shot down in 1967 and held as a prisoner for over five years
  • In 1982, McCain won an Arizona seat in the House of Representatives and in 1986, the Senate
  • He served under six presidents across 36 years in the Senate until his death on August 25  

American war hero, presidential nominee and longtime leading politician John McCain died aged 81 on Saturday afternoon at his home in Arizona.

McCain was the son and grandson of admirals and followed them into the US Naval Academy.

While serving as a pilot, he was shot down over Vietnam in 1967 and held as a prisoner of war for more than five years, suffering horrific torture at the hands of the North Vietnamese.

In 1982 he ran for the House of Representatives on Arizona’s Republican ticket and won. 

Four years later in 1986, he won a seat in the Senate, where he served for the rest of his life as a leader of the Republican Party.
