"It happened out of the blue," he says. "I thought I could die. All of a sudden you find yourself in a different reality – lying in the street with a f—ing four-wheel-drive pinned on your leg."

Nock spent six weeks in hospital and has yet to return properly to the keyboard.

"I can play but I can't really play," he says. "It's going to take me a while."

Drummer James Waples has assembled a stellar line-up of musicians, all of whom have played with Nock or were taught by him, for the benefit gig.

Among the luminaries who will takes to the stage at Ultimo's Foundry 616 will be Mark Isaacs, Barney McAll, Stu Hunter, Phil Slater and Gordon Rytmeister. The venue has donated $200 and given the space for free.

Nock's own compositions will feature heavily throughout the night.

"I'm just going to be a fly on the wall," he says. "I'm really looking forward to it. They're all playing my music and it's going to be really interesting to see what they do."

"I'm a little embarrassed but I thought I'd better just swallow that embarrassment because these kind of things can help bring people together. They are a reminder of the importance of community."
