Another day, another Yankees injury scare.
Shortstop Didi Gregorius left Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium with a bruised left heal after he collided with Toronto first baseman Kendrys Morales in the first inning. Gregorius remained in the game, momentarily, but was relieved by Ronald Torreyes to start the third.
He was taken to Columbia Presbyterian for additional imaging, the team announced
During the Yankees’ six-run first inning, Gregorius sent a right-side bouncer that Toronto second baseman Devon Travis corralled on the outfield grass. Travis spun and threw weakly to first, the ball bouncing before reaching Morales. The first baseman tried to scoop the throw but was leaning across the line in foul territory. Gregorius ran into the defender and went to the ground.
Yankees trainer Steve Donohue came out to tend to the shortstop, who arose and started walking gingerly as the crowd chanted, “Di-Di, Di-Di.” Gregorius, who got a single and RBI on the play, stayed in the game and later scored on Greg Bird’s grand slam.
Gregorius played the field in the top of the second, but when he was due to be on deck in the bottom of the inning, Torreyes came out instead. Then to start the third, Torreyes replaced him and went to second as Gleyber Torres moved to short. There was no immediate word on Gregorius’ injury or its severity.
The Yankees already have, among others, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and CC Sabathia on the disabled list. On Saturday, catcher Austin Romine took a foul ball off the mask and left the game. Manager Aaron Boone and Romine himself both claimed the catcher was OK on Sunday.
