Toby Alderweireld could be offered an immediate route out of Tottenham by Bayern Munich.
The German giants have the Spurs centre back on their shortlist of potential replacements for Jerome Boateng.
Manchester United were interested in Boateng, 29, before the English transfer window shut last week.
But they were unable to agree a deal with Bayern who wanted a permanent £50m transfer while United only wanted to take World Cup winner Boateng on loan.
However, Paris Saint-Germain remain keen on Boateng which would create a vacancy for a new centre-back at the Allianz Arena.
Former Manchester City defender Boateng has already agreed personal terms with PSG.
And they have time to strike a deal with Bayern as the French transfer window doesn’t close until the end of the month.
Alderweireld, 29, had hoped to join United last month after falling down the pecking order at Spurs last season but they failed to firm up their interest in the Belgian stopper.
And he confirmed he is now ready to stay at Spurs following their opening day win against Newcastle, tweeting: “First game, first win. Let’s go and win the title in our new stadium!”
But Bayern, who can still sign players up until August 31, may yet give him something to think about should they lose Boateng.
Sprurs are prepared to allow French winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou to join Mainz on a season-long loan.
The German club also have an option to buy the 23-year-old on a permanent deal. But N’koudou has yet to decide whether he wants to move.
Will Alderweireld be at Spurs when the window shuts?
