According to Carrey, his grumpy co-star told him, “I cannot sanction your buffoonery.”
Jim Carrey has mentioned in the past that he and "Batman Forever" co-star Tommy Lee Jones didn’t get along while filming, but the comedian is finally elaborating on why.
Carrey, who played The Riddler in the 1995 superhero movie, said on "Norm Macdonald Live" Tuesday that his older co-star, who played Two-Face, didn’t appreciate his "star" status.
"I was the star, and that was the problem," Carrey said. "He’s a phenomenal actor, though. Amazing. I still love him."
Carrey said the blood drained from Jones’ face when the two ran into each other at the same restaurant before shooting the biggest scene they had together in the movie.
"I was at a restaurant, and the maitre d’ said, ‘Oh, I hear you’re working with Tommy Lee Jones. He’s over in the corner having dinner,’" Carrey said. "And I went over and I said, ‘Hey, Tommy, how ya doin’?’ And the blood just drained from his face, like he had been thinking about me 24 hours a day."
"He got up, started shaking," Carrey continued. "He must’ve been in mid-kill-me fantasy or something like that. He was like this [makes grunting noises] and he went to hug me and he said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ Like that. And I said, ‘Gee, man, what’s the problem?’ And I pulled up a chair — which probably wasn’t smart — and he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.’"
Carrey also said that Jones "might have been uncomfortable" and out of his element filming "Batman Forever."
"That’s not really his style of stuff," Carrey said.
