First judge Craig Revel Horwood said he was ‘hopeful’ Strictly Come Dancing would soon star same-sex couples.

Clifton, 35, has performed on the BBC One show for five years and his partners have included Susanna Reid and Louise Redknapp.

Taking questions from fans on Twitter, he was asked: ‘As a gay man who loves the show (and thinks you are brilliant), I’m curious where do you stand on same sex dance partners? Would you be open to dancing with a guy if the show put that to you?’ Clifton replied: ‘Just to be clear I’m not involved in any of these decisions. But if that’s what they wanted then I’d have no problem with it.’
Strictly Come Dancing revealed earlier this year that it had ‘no plans’ to change its policy.
But last year Revel Horwood said he was ‘hopeful’ same-sex couples would soon appear on the show.

Clifton’s comments came as the younger brother of YouTube star Zoella was confirmed as the latest celebrity in this year’s Strictly line-up.
Joe Sugg, also an online star, admitted on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show that ‘a lot of people’ might say ‘Who?’ after his name was unveiled.
