Manchester United hopeful David de Gea will sign new deal at Old Trafford

The Spain international has regularly been linked with a move to the Bernabeu and came within minutes of moving three years ago.

But Madrid sealed a £38 million swoop to take Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea last week.

And the 26-year-old Belgian is likely to be the number one for the Spanish giants for many years to come.

That clears the way for de Gea to commit his future to United by formalising a new contract in the next few weeks.

His current deal is due to expire in June although the club have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

The Red Devils were always quietly confident the 27-year-old would choose to extend his stay – and the terms were put in front of him earlier this year.

But the fact his partner Edurne is based in the Spanish capital meant he was always likely to have his head turned.

Senior sources at Old Trafford believe Courtois' move has made life easier for them in the bid to hang on to their man.

De Gea has established himself as one of the best keepers in the world since joining United from Atletico Madrid back in summer 2011.

Meanwhile United are also hoping full-back Matteo Darmian will reject interest from Italy to stay at Old Trafford.

The former Torino defender has been unsettled and constantly linked with a return to his homeland this summer.

Juventus, Napoli and Inter have all shown interest and the 28-year-old would ideally like to go home.

But he started the opening night win over Leicester and Jose Mourinho believes his versatility could be useful.
