It’s not something people tend to ask themselves in their daily lives but, if you’ve ever questioned why penises are shaped the way they are, you’re in for a surprise.
Scientists have come up with a fascinating theory behind penis shape.
We don’t mean the length, or the girth, but the bit at the end that can look a bit like a mushroom.
It turns out there’s a very specific reason why it’s shaped like that – and it’s all to do with biology and love rivals. Interesting.
The theory is, it’s about the survival of the fittest.
Experts believe the penis evolved to have a "ridge" to scoop out the semen of love rivals, giving them an advantage when it comes to getting a woman pregnant.
A team of US scientists at the State University of New York conducted an experiment to test this theory in 2003. They used latex phalluses, an artificial vagina and a mixture of starch and water designed to be a similar consistency to semen.
The results?
They found that the penis ridge (the mushroom part where the glans, or head, meets the shaft) could scoop out more than 90 per cent of the mixture with just one thrust.
Professor Gordon Gallup, who led the team, told the BBC at the time: "The human penis may enable males to substitute their semen for the semen of their competitors".
The found that a penis that isn’t mushroom shaped could only manage to remove 30 per cent of the mixture.
The scientists also discovered that the depth of thrusting was important – a three quarter thrust could only remove 40 per cent of the semen mixture they created.
Bear in mind, this theory is based in the days when women would have sex with multiple men to increase chances of getting pregnant – centuries ago.
It’s not necessarily a particularly useful design these days, as lots of people have children in monogamous relationships, but there we are.
Gallup’s team had even more findings from their penis experiments – published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour at the time.

How to have better sex
They surveyed students and found evidence that sex is "more energetic" if the woman is suspected of cheating or the pair have been apart – and AGAIN it is to do with love rivals.
They reckon this shows a sub-conscious desire on the part of the man to rid his partner of any trace of another’s semen.
