The UK's parched gardens are soaking up the rain after weeks of a blistering heatwave, but for Brits now used to scorching sunshine the downpour is rather unwelcome.
The east of the country will see the worst of the thundery weather – with a yellow warning from the Met Office predicting heavy showers.
Lightning and storms are likely to sweep through the East Midland, Yorkshire and Humber and East of England, with some areas seeing more than an inch of rain.
The warning will lift this evening, when the worst of the weather has battered Britain.
However, despite a few more days of unsettled weather and rain likely to persist into next week, forecasters expect a period of warmth and sunshine to set back in from the last week of August.
A Met Office spokeswoman said: "Temperatures around average for this time of year but certainly not the hot weather that we had a couple of weeks ago.
"At the end of the month we can see warm, and possibly very warm, temperatures developing into the south east.
"We can't put any figures on it, but there certainly is a signal for warm air and possibly very warm weather to return."
But for now, it will be a wet day for much of England, and a cloudy one for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Showers will be heavy and thundery in parts of northern and eastern England before they slowly fade through the evening.
Tomorrow will be dry for many with bright spells, although largely cloudy in western parts of Northern Ireland, northwest England and western Scotland with patchy light rain.
From Wednesday to the weekend the weather will remain unsettled and sometimes windy across the northwest with some heavy rain.
However there will be a fresher feel from Thursday after early rain clears.
Today a flash flood in Liverpool saw a young couple trapped in their car in a dip in the road by the rising water.
