Mourning Yemenis have been digging graves for the 29 children to be buried side by side after being killed by the airstrike which hit a school bus yesterday.

It comes as the Saudi-led coalition that launched the missile announced it will investigate the deadly strike to help ‘clarify their circumstances’ following the attack.

The United Nations and Washington both called for prompt investigations into the airstrike that obliterated a bus at the Dahyan market in the Huthi rebels’ stronghold province of Saada.

The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the attack today behind closed doors.

A senior Saudi-coalition official told news agencies:

‘The leadership of the coalition has ordered the immediate opening of an investigation to assess the events, clarify their circumstances and announce the results as soon as possible.’

As authorities still try to identify victims of the attack, reports suggest the death toll could rise. 

A hospital supported by Red Cross has said the it has received the bodies of 29 children while Huthi health minister Taha al-Mutawakel put the death toll at 51 people, including 40 children.

More than 60 injured are ‘children under the age of ten’.

At the site of the attack, the mangled wreckage of the bus still remains, along with a sizable crater that was formed after the airstrike.
