There’s a new film adaptation of West Side Story in the works, and rumor has it Camila Cabello will play the lead!
Steven Spielberg started casting for the movie back in January, and ever since then, people have been wondering if the former Fifth Harmony member would be up for the coveted role of Maria.
The director was looking for someone who was Latina, aged 15 to 25, could sing and could speak Spanish. Clearly, Camila definitely fits the bill… and she already has some connection to the iconic love story! Last October, she was featured on the song “Almost Like Praying,” which was based on the tune “Maria” from WSS and raised money for Puerto Rico following the hurricane.
Camila might have even hinted at her casting way back in April. The singer posted a photo of Claire Danes as Juliet from Baz Luhrman’s 1996 film adaptation of the Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet:
West Side Story was created as a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic, so Camila def could have been trying to send a secret message with her tweet. And now someone is adding even more fire to the flames. A New York radio DJ named Mike Adams sent out a tweet on Tuesday that suggested the rumors were true:
Camila doesn’t have any acting experience, but with her killer voice and charisma, it wouldn’t be surprising if she got picked for the role anyway! We’re still waiting for an official confirmation, but that hasn’t stopped fans from freaking out about the news:
How would you feel if Camila portrayed Maria?
