Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Paul Pogba is ‘happy’ at club – but Barcelona still on the prowl

The French World Cup winner is wanted by Barcelona and is said to be keen to join.

United insist the midfielder is not for sale, Mourinho says there is no problem with him and he could even play in tonight’s Premier League opener against Leicester.

But Barca are set to step up their pursuit of Pog, 25, before the La Liga window closes on August 31.

Mourinho said: “Paul arrived back on Monday — happy, proud, with a desire to work.

“He worked amazingly well on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“He is one of the players I have to speak to, to see how he feels physically and mentally.

“But it’s the same conversation as with Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard.

“We need words with that small group to see if they can give us a hand.”

United failed to sign anyone on deadline day, despite Mourinho being desperate to land at least one new centre-half.

However, United’s board had doubts over all the manager’s targets — Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng, Toby Alderweireld and Yerry Mina.

The Special One has been frustrated with Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward all summer and now bookies have installed Mourinho as favourite to become the first Prem manager to leave this season.

His relationship with French winger Anthony Martial also shows no sign of improving.

Mourinho told him he is back to square one in terms of fitness after taking time out to be at the birth of his son.

The Portuguese said: “He didn’t train for nine days so must start again.”
