Love Island’s Zara McDermott and Adam Collard have opened up about the dark side of their overnight fame.
Since leaving the villa the pair say they’ve been bombarded by daily abuse from online trolls.
Zara, 21, admitted she’s been left in tears by vicious comments on her appearance, with bullies urging her to get plastic surgery.
Appearing on Lorraine on Tuesday, Zara opened up about her ‘tough’ experience on social media.
"We’ve been catapulted into this world where people feel they have the right to comment negatively on everything you do because you’re in the public eye," she said.
As boyfriend Adam wrapped a supportive arm around her she continued: "I would never do it to someone else ever. I’d never comment on celebs pictures before I went on Love Island."
Zara then read out just some of the comments she’d received on Instagram.
"She’s breathing in so much it hurts look at," said one troll.
Another spat: "Why not just get a boob job to go with all the other plastic?"
Zara, who denies ever going under the knife, said the comments were particularly traumatising as she’d been bullied at school.
"Back then I was so shy and insecure people used to shout comments at me and I’d almost curl up into a ball and not respond.
"But now I’m just not having it," she vowed.
Boyfriend Adam chimed in with his approach to the vile comments.
"I don’t try to look at it as much. The way I deal with it is to kill them with kindness," he explained.
The personal trainer admitted he was overweight at school and like Zara became a target for bullies.
"I could come home and get away form it then but now when it’s on Instagram and twitter you can’t because its constantly popping up on your phone."
Adam then spoke about the tragic Love Island star Sophie Gradon who died in a suspected suicide last month after she’d spoken out about online bullying.
"She was in my friendship group. Sophie was one of the strongest girls I know," he said.
After the aftercare for Love Island contestants was slammed by those whose gone through it, the cast of 2018 have revealed they get regular texts and FaceTime sessions with a psychologist since leaving the show.
