Australia-based dad Brad Kearns soared to viral stardom back in 2016 when he wrote a Facebook post about the hilarious struggles he faced at home with two little kids when his wife was away for 16 hours. Kearns has since launched a successful career as a parenting blogger — and recently wrote a open letter titled “Hey Dads, Your Day Doesn’t End When You Get Home From Work.”
Kearns, who shares sons Knox and Finn with his pregnant wife, Sarah, detailed what happens when he walks though the door at dinnertime.
“I ask her about her day with the boys. She tells me a little bit whilst she’s still getting stuff done,” wrote Kearns in a story published on Australian website Kid Spot. “I use that as open license to talk about mine. She’s usually cleaning the kitchen or still getting the kids ready for bed. Rarely do I ever get home and she’s sitting down. Normally after a few seconds she cuts me off.”
That’s when Sarah assigns him a task. “I’m a pretty terrible house worker at best of times so when I talk I become agonizingly slow for her to watch,” he admitted. “You can literally see her twitching as I use the wrong sponge or turn on an already boiled kettle.”
When it comes to cleaning up, “I normally think, ‘It can wait till later tonight,’” Kearns revealed. But Sarah, a stay-at-home mom, doesn’t see it the same way. “We just need to remember that our partners at home don’t have a set finish time like us,” he noted. “For as long as there’s washing in the basket, rubbish in the bin and dishes in the sink; her day isn’t finished. And while she’s still working, she certainly doesn’t want to hear about my day.”
He signed off with an important message: “So, next time you get home from work . . . show her you love — and her know your day isn’t finished either.”
