Starbucks is going strawless! In a major move for sustainability, the coffee chain announced Monday that it will stop offering customers its signature green plastic straws by 2020. As an alternative, more than 28,000 stores around the globe will start giving out strawless lids, which are already available in select locations in the US and Canada, as well as straws made from biodegradable materials like paper and compostable plastic. The new eco-friendly straw options will be mainly offered to customers who order Frappuccinos, though anyone who prefers or needs to use a straw can request one for their non-Frappuccino drink.
“Starbucks is the largest food and beverage retailer to make such a commitment, which will eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year from Starbucks stores,” the coffee giant said in a press release. Customers in Seattle and Vancouver will be the first to see these changes implemented this Fall, with more to follow soon after. If you simply can’t bear to sip your iced coffee sans straw, may we suggest investing in these reusable stainless steel ones from Amazon? The planet will thank you.
