Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe 'taken to hospital amid reports of ill health'

Sutcliffe, 72, is one of the country's most notorious serial killers and is currently serving 20 life terms at HMP Frankland in County Durham.

The former lorry driver was convicted of murdering 13 women and attempting to kill seven more in 1981.

The Yorkshire Post reports the killer was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital on Sunday evening. His condition is not yet known.

Dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper by the press, Sutcliffe's crimes took place over a five year period between 1975 and 1980.

He is reported to have been ill in recent months having previously lost his sight in one eye because of the effects of diabetes.

He was arrested when police realised his car had false number plates, and officers soon noticed that he shared many physical characteristics with the Yorkshire Ripper.

During his trial he claimed he heard "voices from God" telling him to attack prostitutes.

He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia after being convicted and detained at Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.

However, he was moved to HMP Frankland after a ruling that he was mentally well enough to be transferred.

In 2010, the High Court dismissed an appeal by Sutcliffe – and confirmed that he will never be released from custody.

Since 24 August 2016, he has been held in HM Prison Frankland.

The Ministry of Justice declined to comment.
