Woman brings graveyard in Kent to life with urns that sing when mourners arrive

The forgotten burial ground has speakers disguised as vases, put there by composer Emily Peasgood, 37, as part of an art project.

Movement triggers sensors in the urns, which sets off a song. The five songs play in sync if visitors set them off at the same time.

Emily said it had been a joy watching people’s reactions at the Baptist Burial Ground in Folkestone, Kent.

She added: “I’ve seen complete strangers talking to each other. I heard a lady walk past a gravestone and say, ‘I suppose the dead did have voices’.”

The graveyard, used for Baptists who could not be buried elsewhere, had been abandoned for more than 150 years. The Halfway to Heaven installation won Emily a prize at this year’s British Composer Awards.
