Who is Sir Graham Brady? Chairman of the 1922 Committee who announced vote of no confidence

Here's everything you need to know about the Tory MP for Altrincham and Sale West, whose announcement this morning left the nation reeling.

Who is Sir Graham Brady?

Born on 20 May, 1967 in Salford, Lancashire, Sir Graham attended Durham University before election to the seat of Altrincham and Sale West in 1997.

He resigned as Shadow Minister for Europe in 2007 in protest at David Cameron's stance against grammar schools.

He was a supporter of Brexit in the 2016 EU Referendum.

Sir Graham has served as Chairman of the 1922 Committee since 2010.

What is the 1922 Committee?

The Conservative Committee gives backbench Tory MPs the chance to air their concerns, report on constituency work and co-ordinate legislative agendas.

Members meet weekly while Parliament is in session and play an important role in choosing their party leader.

They are also influential in potentially toppling whoever's in charge – as shown on December 12, 2018, when Sir Brady announced that a vote of no confidence in Theresa May would be taking place that evening.

Unless the leader steps down voluntarily, a leadership challenge generally begins with a vote of no confidence being called.

It takes 48 letters to be submitted to trigger a vote, or 15 per cent of Conservative MPs.

The magic number was reached in the wake of May's unpopular EU Brexit plan, and her eleventh hour cancellation of a vote that left the Tories in further disarray.
