Councils across the country will be altering their collection times to fit with the festive holidays all the way until New Year. Here's what you need to know.

When do the bins go out?

The majority of Britain's homes will have their bins collected either a few days early or a day late this holiday season – however, this will be different for every council.

If you're living in England and Wales, this tool will make sure you get the day right.

Just enter your postcode, and it will direct you to your council's collection page.

In theory, if your usual bin collection falls on Christmas Day this year, you can expect the bin men to be collecting it a day later on Boxing Day instead or a few days earlier on December 22.

Some local councils have decided not to have any collections on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day– so you need to check what the exact arrangements for your area are with your local council.

Why do councils collect waste?

Councils are legally obliged to collect your waste for free under the Environmental Protection Act, but they have the power to decide when and where that will be.

Unrecycled waste is usually collected weekly, while recycling collections are normally weekly or fortnightly.

Some councils have experimented with monthly collections.
