Two police officers could be charged over ex-Aston Villa star Dalian Atkinson's death

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has handed a file to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider potential criminal charges.

Dalian, 48, died in hospital in Telford on August 15, 2016, after suffering a fatal heart attack.

Three West Mercia officers were interviewed under criminal caution and were served with gross misconduct notices.

The actions of the third officer have not been referred to the CPS.

Dalian was suffering from kidney and liver problems and pneumonia at the time of his death and was undergoing dialysis three times a week.

He was shot by a Taser in the street where he grew up and taken to hospital.

Medics battled for more than an hour to save him but he tragically passed away.

Atkinson had stints at Ipswich Town and Manchester City, where he scored twice in eight games.

IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said: “On the basis of the evidence gathered I have decided to refer the matter to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider any potential criminal charges over the interaction two police officers had with Dalian Atkinson.

"This has been a lengthy and complex investigation and I am grateful for the patience shown by all concerned.

"We have kept West Mercia Police, Dalian’s family, and HM Coroner informed during the course of the investigation.”
