At least two people have been killed and 12 others injured after a school bus mounted a pavement in Hong Kong on Monday.  

The accident occurred at about 2pm local time in North Point, a residential district, when the driver of the minibus had forgotten to put the handbrake on when he parked the vehicle up a slope, according to police.    

The 19-seater then started rolling down the hill for more than 100 metres (328 feet) before crashing into a building entrance. No one was on board the vehicle.

A dashcam video of the accident showed the bus being parked outside North Point Methodist Primary School on Cheung Hong Street. 

It is seen rolling down the street after the driver left the vehicle. The driver immediately gave chase but was run over by the bus. 

The bus ran into the junction of King’s Road and Hei Wo Street and mounted the pavement hitting a number of passers-by, according to chief inspector Sun lun-yam in a media briefing following initial investigations.

The driver suffered injuries to his head, neck and back and remained in ICU at hospital

Police investigate after an empty school bus crashed in the North Point district of Hong Kong

The 62 year-old driver suffered injuries to his head, neck and back and remained in the intensive care unit at hospital, the officer added.  

A team of 82 firemen and paramedics tended to the scene. Two men and one woman were trapped under the vehicle, according to a representative of the fire department.  

The two people killed have been identified as an 83-year-old man and an 80-year-old woman, according to chief inspector Sun.

The rest of the victims range from 22 to 89 in age and sustained injuries including fractures, severe bleeding and abrasions, he added. They have been transported to two hospitals for treatment. 

At least two taxis were damaged in the accident as well. 

Police added that the area is not an accident black spot and officers have not made any arrests yet.
