A much-needed physiotherapist is set to be saved from deportation after his story was told in the Sunday People.
Two days after our report revealing that Dover’s only physio Satheesh Gounder would be sent back to India, Home Secretary Sajid Javid withdrew the threat.
Mr Gounder’s local MP, Tory Charlie Elphicke, said: “The Sunday People deserves real credit for backing our community’s campaign.”
Married Mr Gounder, 35, was forced to close his in-demand two-year-old business in May because he could not find an assistant physio – a requirement of renewing his work visa.
Yet Britain is suffering a shortage of 5,000 NHS and private physios, making finding one extremely difficult.
Mr Gounder, who put £50,000 into his Kent practice, is facing homelessness, with little of his savings left.
Yet he still treats the part-paralysed wife of a British soldier for free twice a week.
In his letter to Mr Elphicke, Mr Javid said he is fully reviewing this case and supporting Mr Gounder in making a new application, which he hopes will succeed.
Yet for weeks Mr Javid had allegedly ignored the MP’s queries about Mr Gounder.
