Schoolboy in coma after firework explodes in his face and blows off two fingers

A seven-year-old boy was left in a coma after a firework blew off two of his fingers when it exploded in his face.

The horrific incident meant Carson Boyd needed a 12-hour operation to save his hand and he suffered serious facial and hand injuries.

Police are investigating how Carson got hold of the banger in Glasgow on Tuesday.

Medics placed him in an induced coma to help him recover, the Daily Record reports.

His aunt Susan Boyd, 31, said: "He lost his index and ring finger on his left hand.

"They have taken a skin graft from the top of his leg and attached it to his hand via his thumb to keep the blood flowing. His hand is currently attached to his leg.

“He has a rod in his hand and they say the next 48 hours are crucial. They keep coming to check the circulation.

“His face was covered with blood and he had a piece of firework stuck in his left eye.

“He has heat damage in his cornea. We don’t know the full extent of the damage yet. His face is quite bad because of the debris from the blast and he has a hole in his mouth. His tongue is burned and he has knocked some teeth out.

“He’s had stitches in his mouth and has a burn on is right hand and on his leg.

“His airways are burned too so he’s on a machine to help him breathe. He’s on high doses of morphine and ketamine.”

Carson’s mum Chantelle, 27, found Carson severely injured in the street near his house.

Neighbours grabbed towels in a bid to help the youngster and he was rushed to hospital.

Susan added: “He couldn’t see. He was screaming for help and passed out outside the hospital. It was critical. He had to go to resus.”

Distraught Chantelle said: “We want to warn people what fireworks can do to a family. I’m so grateful to everyone for their help and support.”

Medics were last night deciding whether to operate further on the schoolboy last night.

Police said inquiries into the incident were ongoing.

A Just Giving page set up by a friend to help support the family through their ordeal had raised more than £1000 in just one day. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/chantellecarson
