Jeremy Malim, 73, was today jailed for the sexual offences which took place at Brambletye Prep School in Sussex from 1975 to 2002

A retired prep school teacher who would touch boys ‘in almost plain sight of other boys’ has been sentenced to six years in jail for sex offences against three male pupils.

Jeremy Malim, aged 73 years, now retired and living in France, was convicted today after a nine-day trial.

He was convicted of four counts of indecent assault between 19 and 41 years ago following a police investigation.

Detective Constable Phil Cracknell, of the East Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit was one of the officers involved in the investigation.

Speaking after the conviction, he said: ‘Our investigation found that Malim used his position of authority and trust to effectively ‘groom’ the boys he approached into a situation in which they felt unable to resist or report his advances.

‘This consisted of touching them inside their clothing, often making light of it and often in almost plain sight of other boys.’

Malim’s convictions included one involving a boy pupil then aged between 12 and 13 years between 1996 and 1999 and one count of indecent assault on a boy aged between 10 and 11 years at the school between 1977 and 1979.

They also consisted of one count of indecent assault on a boy aged nine years between 1978 and 1979.

All the offences were committed at Brambletye Prep School near East Grinstead, where Malim was employed as a senior master and French teacher between 1975 and 2002.

Malim was cleared of two counts of indecent assault on the 12 to 13-year-old boy between 1996 and 1999, but this was the second time he was tried on the six counts relating to the victim after a jury failed to agree on verdicts at the same court on September 4, 2017.

Det. Con. Cracknell said: ‘The first two of these victims came to us, quite separately in 2014 and 2015, for the first time. Through one of them we then traced the third victim.

‘They have all given evidence at the trial at Hove Crown Court and we admire their readiness to describe what happened to them, even after all these years, and the impact it has had on their lives.

‘The victim of the 1996 to 1999 offences felt encouraged to come forward on seeing publicity about justice that had been done for so many other victims of similar non-recent offences, in Sussex and across the country.

‘The victim of the 1977 to 1999 offences came forward separately and our enquiries then led us to the third victim.’

Malim will be on the Sex Offenders Register for life and had been living in Route Gare, Morteaux-Coliboeuf in Normandy before he was jailed.

Det. Con. Cracknell said: ‘The young and vulnerable victims somehow accepted it at the time but it is quite clear that their distressing experiences stayed with them.’

A spokesman for Sussex Police emphasised that Malim left Brambletye School 16 years ago and that there were now no current safeguarding concerns in relation to pupils at the school.
