Pedestrian on M42 motorway killed in horror crash leaving road closed for 'several hours'

The motorway is closed northbound between junctions 10 in Warwickshire and 11 in Leicestershire, creating a tailback of around eight miles.

The pedestrian was a man aged in his 20s, Warwickshire Police said.

The "serious collision" occured at around 3am this morning.

A Highways England spokesman confirmed to The Sun Online a pedestrian had been killed at the scene.

They said: "Warwickshire Police, West Midlands Ambulance Services and Highways England Traffic Officers are on scene.

"The road is likely to be closed for several hours and may impact on the morning peak travel period.

“In addition lane 2 is closed on the southbound carriageway to allow incident screens to be erected to for police to carry out scene investigation work.

“Please allow additional travel time if heading towards the area this morning."

Incident screens have been put in place at the site while emergency services carry out their work.

The section of motorway is expected to be closed for most of the morning.

Traffic is being diverted via the A5 eastbound.

The southbound carriageway was closed for a short time but has now reopened with only one lane closed on that section.

Warwickshire Police Superintendant Richard Long said: "We're working with Highways England to keep disruption to motorists to a minimum however there will be delays this morning and we would urge motorists to find an alternative route if they can."
