Black Friday shoppers flee in horror as teenager is killed by police after he shot a 12-year-old girl and 18-year-old boy at Alabama mall

Shoppers could be seen fleeing in terror as shots rang out an Alabama mall prior to Black Friday shopping, leaving one teen dead and two others, including a 12-year-old girl, injured.

Authorities say the shooting happened at about 9.30 pm on Thursday at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, a nearby suburb of Birmingham.

Police say a fight between two teens led to one opening fire on the other, believed to be an 18-year-old. 

The shooter fled but was confronted and shot dead by police with the second teen rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector revealed that one officer found the suspect, ‘did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene.’

Rector said a 12-year-old girl was also shot in the exchange. She suffered a single gunshot wound and has gone through surgery.

He added that she ‘does not have life-threatening injuries’. 

The Riverchase Galleria said the mall is closed until further notice.

Police do not know how the confrontation began, but ‘we do not believe at this point the 18-year-old was armed,’ said Captain Rector  

Horrified shoppers took to social media to describe how they heard gunshots inside the mall, which was open late on Thanksgiving.

The Hoover Police Department said the scene is now secure.

Photos and videos of the mass panic caused by the shooting were shared on social media. 

One Twitter user said: ‘I’m in the parking lot of the Riverchase Galleria in Alabama where a shooting just happened. I’m so shaky right now I’m sorry if I don’t make any sense. The suspect is dead. My prayers go out to those injured.’

Mall staff later tweeted: ‘We are devastated by the incident that happened tonight in our shopping center. We are working closely with the Hoover Police Department and are grateful for their swift action to contain the situation. 

‘While there is no current danger to our community, the shopping center will remain closed until further notice.’
