Nicola Smout, 37, who had Crohn’s disease, collapsed and died hours after kissing her children goodnight

A mother collapsed and died shortly after kissing her children goodnight, a heartbroken family have revealed.

Mother of-three Nicola Smout, 37,  who had Crohn’s disease, was recovering well after emergency surgery at her home in Plymouth.

She had spent an idyllic Sunday with her family on October 7 – enjoying a barbecue with husband Richard, and children Ethan, 11, Elaina, eight, and six-year-old Lidia.

However, shortly after putting them to bed she collapsed and was rushed to the operating where doctors worked to remove a blood clot from her lung.

Despite the best efforts of medical teams, Nicola died the following day.

RIchard said: ‘She had a lovely day with the children, and had the barbecue she’d asked for.

‘That night she said goodnight to the kids and was resting on the settee when she just collapsed.

‘At Derriford Hospital they did their best for her. The hardest thing I had to do was tell the children. But at least she had seen all their birthdays and our anniversary.’

A JustGiving appeal has now been launched to raise £8,000 for Nicola’s funeral, with about £3,500 already pledged.

Her heartbroken husband, a keen motorcyclist, is also planning a bikers’ send off.

Nicola will be taken to Weston Mill Cemetery, Plymouth, Devon by motorcycle sidecar.

Richard, with Ethan riding pillion, will be following on his Kawasaki 22R14 and wants as many bikers as possible to form a two-wheeled entourage.

He added: ‘Nicola would ride on the back with me.

‘She loved going out on the bike, we’d go to Plymouth Bike Night on the Hoe.

‘I had bought her a new helmet, she never got to use it.’

A believer in the ‘biker’s code’, Richard said he has ridden out at the funerals of other bikers, even those he didn’t know personally.

He wants other motorcyclists to show their support for him and Nicola.

Plymouth and District Funeral Services’ Cheryl Burdett has arranged for Nicola to be driven from the firm’s Billacombe Road base to Weston Mill on 10.45am on October 29. The funeral will be at 12.15pm.

‘Bikers look after each other,’ said Richard. ‘This will be Nicola’s last ride and any biker can join to make it special for her.’

Nicola and Richard met as teenagers and have been an item since attending Lipson Community College.

‘We were childhood sweethearts,’ said Richard, an IT tutor at Achievement Training. ‘We got together in the first year at sixth form and stayed together.’

They married in 2005, lived in Wales for two years, and Cornwall for 12 months, and returned to Plymouth in 2008 to raise a family.

Nicola worked as a veterinary nurse and Richard said: ‘Animals were her biggest passion until the children came along. They were the final part of our jigsaw.

‘She was a loving and caring mother, my friend and wife, she always wanted to help others.

‘The children have been doing OK, I’m so proud of them and I’ll keep going for them.’
