Meghan Markle can’t stop giggling as Prince Harry strokes koala at Taronga Zoo

Pregnant Meghan Markle and Prince Harry continued the first day of their royal tour with a visit to the zoo hours after announcing the Duchess’s pregnancy

The royals travelled to Sydney’s Taronga Zoo where they officially opened the new Taronga Institute of Science and Learning and met two koala bears and their joeys who are part of the breeding programme.

Koalas Ruby and Wattle each have a joey, named Meghan and Harry in honour of the royal visit.

Meghan and Harry will then visit the laboratory to meet conservation scientists who are working on efforts to reduce illegal wildlife trafficking.

Their visit won’t be the first time we’ve seen Meghan and Harry up close with some furry friends recently – as the pair were spotted stroking dogs in the crowds during their visit to Sussex earlier this month.

Meghan and Harry were spotted kneeling down in front of crowds to pat the dogs who had been stood at the roadside with their owners for hours.

Their visit to the zoo comes just hours after they announced their happy baby news via Kensington Palace.

It said: "Their Royal Highness and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019."

Speaking this morning (UK time), a senior Palace source said: “Everyone is hugely excited about the news.

"The whole of the family are very happy they were all able to congratulate the couple in person before they left for their first major overseas tour."

Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland , who lives in Los Angeles, California, is said to "very happy about this lovely news".

A Palace spokesperson added that the proud mother is "looking forward to welcoming her first grandchild".

It is not clear whether the Duchess’s dad Thomas Markle – who missed her wedding in May – has been told of the pregnancy.

Meghan is not believed to have spoken to her father since the ceremony, after he confessed to selling paparazzi snaps.
