Man stays behind with blind mum, 90, and fights California wildfire with a hose

A man refused to leave his blind 90-year-old mother behind as the California wildfires approached their home – instead staying put and battling the flames with a HOSE.

Brad Weldon, who did not evacuate with mum Norma, had just minutes to grab buckets and water as the deadly fire tore towards their house in the town of Paradise.

Miraculously their home is one of the last ones in the neighbourhood that is still standing.

Brad said: "The wind was coming this way … 60 mile-an-hour winds. It was coming straight at us.

"We both hit the ground and started watering ourselves down because we were going to cook."

Brad said that he wasn’t sure if he was “brave or stupid” to risk his life in such a way.

However as the “fire tornado” churned towards him and his mother, powerful winds apparently “pushed the fire away from us”.

Brad added: "I believe that was the angels."

The pair are currently camped out in their house after Brad said: “My mom is my world.”

So far 48 people have died in what is the deadliest spreading wildfire the state of California has ever seen.

The town of Paradise, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, has been almost completely destroyed by the fire with homes, businesses, churches, a hospital and school totally incinerated.

Meanwhile celebrities such as Robin Thicke, Gerard Butler and Liam Hemsworth have shared pictures of their obliterated homes in Malibu, Southern California, after wildfires destroyed them.
