Leaf blowers carry on with work as Storm Ali batters British Isles

‘Stupidity or skill. I’m not qualified to judge’: Bizarre moment leaf blowers diligently carry on with their work in 70mph winds as Storm Ali bombards the British Isles

  • The bizarre footage has been taken both in Dublin and Glasgow this afternoon
  • Two intrepid workmen were determined not to let the weather stop them work
  • Both were ridiculed on social media with many asking what they were doing

Storm Ali hit the British Isles today bringing gusts of up to 70mph to parts of the country – but this hasn’t stopped two determined leaf blowers from going about their business.

The intrepid workmen were videoed both in Ireland and Scotland eager to not let the inclement weather stop them, much to the delight of onlookers.

One Twitter user by the name of Dublinmaker posted a video on social media expressing his amazement at one of the workmen in Dublin.

He said: ‘He was very seriously gathering leaves in the storm. I saw no sign of devilment in his face. Nothing hinders the maintenance dept.’

The footage, which was filmed in the village of Chapelizod, comes as Storm Ali brings widespread disruption to parts of the British Isles.

A Met Office amber weather warning is in place for a large swathe of the UK with power cuts and flying debris possible as the first named storm of the season sweeps through.

Given this, many found the leaf blower footage highly amusing and commented on the video to say as much.

One user called Manny said: ‘Stupidity or skill. I’m not qualified to judge.’

While Ridge said: ‘The leaves don’t stand a chance’

Gary Daly claims to have witnessed the bizarre scene, saying: ‘Tip of the cap to guy working a leaf blower around Citywest in Storm Ali.’

One even joked that the man could be the reason for the storm, saying: ‘Could man with leaf blower responsible for Storm Ali?’

Gary Fox suggested the Irish workman might not be using a leaf blower, however.

He said: ‘Be careful, the leaves on the trees are green, therefore not the leaf falling season. Probably spraying weed killer or similar.’

The worker’s Scottish leaf blowing equivalent was also caught on camera this afternoon – despite wind and rain blasting the city of Glasgow.

Jaclyn Bryson filmed the clip from her office on Caledonian Road.

Jaclyn said her co-workers were ‘in stitches laughing’ when they realised what he was doing.

Social media users were quick to comment on the post, dubbing the worker a ‘f****** idiot’ and a ‘f***y’.

Storm Ali hit the British Isles today and is seen here enveloping much of Ireland and Scotland

Posting the footage to Facebook, Jaclyn wrote: ‘Meanwhile in the Gorbals – Man out blowing leaves on windiest day of year.’

The 18-second-clip has already been viewed over 29,000 times since it was uploaded this afternoon.

The footage begins with two workers wearing high-vis orange clothing beside a large patch of grass.

While one worker takes a lawn mower back to the pair’s van, it becomes clear the other worker is blowing away the extra grass cuttings – with a leaf blower.

Despite the brisk wind and rain showering down – leading the worker to hold his hood down with his hand – he continues to ‘blow’ away the grass.

The gardener makes sure to blow left and right while he walks along a grass verge – before heading back to the van to join his colleague.

On social media, Marcus Bain said: ‘What a f****** idiot.’

David Lewis added: ‘These morons’ bosses need a reality check. Are you kidding me? What is the point of this nonsense?’

An amber Met Office weather alert is expected to be in place until 6pm this evening for large parts of the British Isles.
