When a wide-eyed Duke and Duchess of Sussex greeted cheering crowds from the palatial balcony of the Grand Pacific Hotel in Fiji’s capital on Tuesday night, it seemed like a moment of historic proportions.

But for long-time Royal watchers the scene was eerily familiar, a throwback even, to a similar sight 65 years ago when the prince’s grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, completed the very same act.

Though much has changed for the Royals in the intervening years, the Grand Pacific Hotel has retained much of its Fijian charm – and Royal ties – which now run deeper than ever.

Today, guests are treated to the ‘best of old world charms, South Pacific hospitality and contemporary service’ at the five-star ocean-side accommodation, which first opened in 1914.

Lauded on its website as an ‘icon of the South Pacific’, the hotel’s design appears to have drawn complete inspiration from its colonial glory days while providing guests with modern luxuries and personable service

Inside guests are spoiled for choice with six dining venues, a full-service spa, fitness club, oversize outdoor pool and a range of private lounges and old-world spaces to unwind in after a long day on the island paradise

‘This visit is particularly nostalgic for us as a young married couple—my grandparents stayed in this very hotel, the Grand Pacific, a number of times over the years,’ Prince Harry said of his visit to the hotel

It is believed the Duke and Duchess will stay at the appropriately named Royal Suite which has hosted members of the British Royal family and global society’s elite since soon after the turn of the 20th Century.

The room overlooks the hotel’s grounds and across to Suva Harbour and is the Grand Pacific’s most decadent – and expensive – room, setting punters back $1376 (AUD) or £751 per night.

However it is complete with a private verandah, a spacious living and dining area, and a bathroom fitted with a Jacuzzi – the regal suite is ideally designed for relaxing after a busy day of engagements.

For those not willing to part with as much cash as the Royal pair, other five-star options are available including the Queen Elizabeth room, aptly named after the prince’s grandmother.

This choice would set Harry and Meghan back nearly $1000 (AUD) or £542 for each night of their stay, but overlooks Albert Park and has been redecorated to feature photographs and memorabilia from the Queen and Prince Philip’s first visit in 1953.

The Royal couple were the guests of honour at a state reception hosted by the President of Fiji at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Tuesday night

However, the most famous Royal moment came just months after her coronation, when a young Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip took to the Grand Pacific’s balcony to greet crowds of excited Fijians during a ball held in her honour.

The greeting marked a landmark moment in the then-new monarch’s relationship with the people of the far flung island nation, which has been part of the British Empire in 1874 – and became later a member of the Commonwealth in 1970.

Since then, the Grand Pacific Hotel has played host to the Monarch twice more, in 1977 and 1982, Prince Charles for a state dinner in 1970, Prince Andrew in 1998 and had Princess Anne as its most recent royal visitor in 2006.
