Hunt for British backpacker, 22, who mysteriously vanished in New Zealand after failing to respond to birthday messages

The family of Grace Millane are desperately trying to reach the 22-year-old after she didn't return to her room in the Auckland hostel five days ago.

Originally from Essex, she travelled to the North Island city two weeks ago but set off alarms bells when she didn't respond to birthday well-wishes.

Her brother Michael said Grace had been missing for five days after failing to return to her room, and police were now scouring social media and CCTV for clues.

He added: "Thursday was the last time we spoke to Gracie, we speak daily. We're still appealing for information."

Michael also posted a public appeal on Facebook, imploring those who read it to share it across community groups.

He wrote: "She has not returned to her hostel room in Auckland New Zealand and family members have had no contact since Saturday 1st December.

"The Embassy have been contacted. Please share and contact if you have any information regarding her whereabouts."

Grace has been staying at the Base Backpackers on Queen Street, a popular accommodation provider in the centre of the city.

British High Commission Wellington consular manager Tony McLeod told NewstalkZB the commission was aware of reports of a missing British national.

"We are working with the family in the UK and New Zealand Police in relation to reports of a missing British national in New Zealand.

"We are unable to make further comment while police are investigating the matter."

Grace graduated from the University of Lincoln in September.
