The head of the Government’s fertility watchdog has urged private clinics to put a £5,000 cap on the cost of a cycle of IVF.
The call by Sally Cheshire, chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), comes as The Mail on Sunday can reveal that NHS England is to impose a £5,000 limit on what it pays private clinics for each IVF cycle for health service patients.

Some clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), which are responsible for local health services, have been paying private clinics up to £11,000.
As well as saving the NHS money, Ms Cheshire hopes the cap will heap ‘moral pressure’ on commercial clinics to adopt the same costs for private patients.
