A security worker accidentally locked himself inside his own cash delivery van today – and had to be rescued by a specialist technician.

The red faced driver was forced to call for help while stuck inside the back of the G4S van outside a Barclays bank in the centre of Winchester, Hampshire.

However, some police officer who heard about the incident were not entirely sympathetic to the driver’s plight, mocking him on Twitter with the hashtags ‘#laughingstock’ and ‘#barreloflaughs’.

The technician managed to force his way through the heavily protected door of the van

A workman armed with drill plus a hammer and punch finally released the man by removing the driver’s door lock just before midday.

Witness Zachary Culpin said the shaven-headed van driver looked suitably embarrassed and ‘left quite quickly’ after being freed from the dark blue Mercedes van.

Mr Culpin, 34, said: ‘I saw the G4S security van stopped outside a Barclays bank and a police car parked next to it.

‘The security man had managed to get himself locked in the back of the van and a contractor had just arrived with a drill to get him out again.

Members of the public also thought it was quite funny that the driver got locked in his van

Witness said after being freed the driver got straight behind the wheel and drove away

‘I think he had been in there for at least half an hour when they used the drill to open the driver’s side door and get into the van.

‘The driver looked pretty embarrassed – I know I would be if that had happened to me. He left quite quickly, getting straight into the driver’s seat and immediately driving off.’

Hampshire Police’s response officers described their amusement at the ‘unusual job’ on Twitter after being called to the scene this morning.

Their tweet was accompanied by a gif of a ‘Box of Shame’.

They wrote: ‘Unusual job this morning when a cash van(sic) in Winchester city centre managed to lock themselves inside the back of the van.

‘Help is on its way to release them. #lock #laughingstock #barreloflaughs’

The worker was eventually freed after the technician drilled out the van’s locks to get inside

Gareth Skinner, head of operational risk for G4S Cash solutions said: ‘At around 10:45am on Tuesday October, 2,  2018 on Jewry Street, Winchester, one of our crew members experienced a technical fault with a cash van.

‘A G4S cash van technician arrived on scene in less than an hour to assist our crew member, reset the system and the vehicle was taken for investigation and repair.’
