  • Investigation launched into incident in Oss, 60 miles from Amsterdam

Four children aged four to 11 have been killed when a train slammed into an electric cargo bike in the Netherlands.

A minder riding the bike and a fifth child were seriously injured in the crash, which took place at a railway crossing in Oss, a town 62 miles southeast of Amsterdam.

The five children were being transported from a day care centre to a primary school when the cargo bike somehow ended up stuck on the tracks, local media reports.

Accident: The four children, aged four to 11, were being transported to school by a minder, who was injured in the crash along with a fifth child, in Oss, 62 miles southeast of Amsterdam

The rail crossing, located near Oss’ main railway station, has warning lights, and red and white barriers to keep pedestrians off tracks when trains pass.

Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the collision on Thursday morning.

The two critically injured victims were taken to a local hospital.

Oss mayor Wobine Buijs-Glaudemans said local authorities ‘stand with the families, the school, the day care center and everybody else involved.’

The children were being transported on an electric cargo tricycle called ‘Stint’, a type of vehicle which has become popular among Dutch parents and daycare centres for transporting young children.

Tragedy: Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the horrific collision in Oss on Thursday morning

The ‘Stint’ has a large plastic box mounted on three or four wheels, with an adult minder standing on the back to steer.

The cargo vehicle can reach a top speed of 15mph and the box has space for up to ten small children.

Earlier this year, the head of the Dutch national Road Safety organisation Veilig Verkeer Nederland [Safe Traffic Netherlands] branded the Stints dangerous, and said they should require a license.

ProRail, the company responsible for rail infrastructure in the Netherlands, said in a statement that the cause of the collision is under investigation.

‘This is a very dark day, terrible for the next of kin and those involved,’ said ProRail CEO Pier Eringa. ‘There are no words to describe this.’
