The mother of notorious Mexican druglord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman wants to come see her son — and she’s asking the Mexican government for help.
Lawyers working on behalf of Maria Consuela announced the appeal Thursday in Mexico City, as the eighth week of Guzman’s drug-trafficking trial wrapped in Brooklyn federal court.
“We have asked [the Mexican foreign minister to petition US authorities] for a humanitarian visa for Chapo Guzman’s mother, Maria Consuelo, his sister Hermilda and his other sister Bernarda,” Jose Luis Gonzalez Meza, one of Guzman’s many lawyers, told reporters outside the foreign ministry.
A small handful of supporters gathered nearby for the announcement, holding signs reading: “Chapo, we love you!” and “Chapo, the people support you.”
“His mother is getting on in years — she’s over 80 — and is in delicate health and wants to see her son,” said Gonzalez.
Guzman remains held in solitary confinement in the Metropolitan Correction Center in Manhattan, where he’s only allowed visits with his seven-year-old twin daughters, and his lawyers.
His sister Bernarda was allowed a single visit following his extradition to New York before her visa was revoked, frustrating his kin.
“The government claimed on one hand that his sister was able to visit him, and then immediately yanked her visa to make it impossible for her to do so,” a source close to Guzman’s family groused to the Post.
Gonzalez Thursday also claimed he was contesting Guzman’s extradition, saying it was illegal and the kingpin’s rights had been violated.
Guzman faces up to life behind bars if convicted of various drug trafficking charges, including operating a continuing criminal enterprise.
