Armed police are called to bookmakers after man slashes at windows with a CHAINSAW

  • Staff at Coral bookmakers in Ashford town centre said man had T-shirt over head 
  • They said that he used the power tool to slice through the window of the shop 
  • Two members of the public were threatened but no arrests have been made  

Workers at a bookmakers were left fearing for their safety after a masked man tried to break into the shop using a chainsaw.

Police were alerted to the shocking incident in Ashford town centre at around 8pm, as members of the public were threatened by the armed assailant. 

Staff at the bookmakers said the man had a T-shirt over his head and used the power tool to slice through the shop window.

Damage was also caused to a lamppost near to the shop.

One wrote: ‘Stay safe if you’re in Ashford tonight. Erratic man destroying things up the town with a chainsaw.’ 

Another person thought the man was wielding an angle-grinder.

Photographer Richard Grebby said; ‘Maniac in Ashford town centre with a grinder.’

A Kent Police spokesman said they were called to the scene at 7.51pm after reports a man had damaged a shop window with a power tool before making threats to two members of the public. 

They added: ‘No injuries have been reported and at present no arrests have been made, however officers remain in the area conducting enquiries.’ 

A lamppost near to the scene was also damaged during the carnage
