Who is Tommy Cooper, what was his cause of death and when is the In His Own Words documentary on TV?

Now, years after his passing, a documentary about his life will be on TV on Christmas Day and here's the lowdown.

Who is Tommy Cooper?

The iconic Welsh prop comedian and magician was born on March 19, 1921.

The Glamorgan native was a member of The Magic Circle and often sported a red fez.

His career started, perhaps, with his father bought him a magic set at the age of 8.

Later in his life, Tommy joined the entertainment party of The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes and developed a comedy act around his magic tricks.

From then on, he had an unstoppable career across television and stage.

What was his cause of death?

Tommy's life came to a tragic end on April 15, 1984.

The comedian was midway through his act on the London Weekend Television show Live from Her Majesty's in Westminster when the unfortunate event happened.

He had a heart attack on live national television and collapsed in front of millions of viewers.

His personal assistant, along with the crows, thought it was a part of the act and simply laughed when he first fell and started looking distressed.

However, soon it became apparent that Tommy was unwell and paramedics took him to the Westminster Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

When is the In His Own Words documentary on TV?

In His Own words will be on our screens on Christmas Day (Tuesday, December 25).

Viewers can catch the documentary on Channel 5 at 9:15 pm.

The one-off special celebrates Tommy's life and features many important names who talk about working with him.
