Princess Charlotte of Cambridge is the only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton and because she’s so adorable and steals the spotlight everywhere she goes (like weddings), the public loves learning more and more about the young princess.
She was born on May 2, 2015, and after the palace announced that the duke and duchess welcomed a baby girl, many started taking bets on if her name would be Diana. Hours later her name was announced and instead of being named after just one person, she was named after several. Here’s what Princess Charlotte’s full name is and who she’s really named after.

Who Princess Charlotte is named after
Her full name is Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. In stating the obvious, her middle names are nods to her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and the late Princess Diana, who is her paternal grandmother.
As for her first name, that is the feminine version of her grandfather Prince Charles’ name. But not too many people are aware that the princess shares her name with a member of her mother’s family too as Charlotte is the middle name of her mom’s sister, Pippa.
Common name with other royals
So now we know exactly who the young princess was named after but a few other royals throughout history have also had the name.
For instance, there was Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who was Queen consort to her husband, King George III. She ruled alongside him as the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1818.
There was also King Charles I, who became king at the age of 25. He was the monarch of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until 1649 when he was executed after being tried for treason. In addition, the king had a child named Charles II. He grew up in exile but was invited back to England when he was 30 years old and succeeded his father.

When it comes to the regal title the duke and duchess’ daughter was given at birth that could one day change as her role in the family shifts. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge may one day receive the title Princess Royal, which is currently held by her great-aunt Princess Anne.
However, her future husband and children may not get any royal titles at all as those are usually passed down through sons of the monarch. That will be the case with her brothers unless the reigning monarch chooses to bend the rules for the princess.
Speaking of her brothers, they are also named after members of the royal family.
Who her brothers are named after
Charlotte’s big brother, Prince George, gets his first name from Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI. The prince’s middle names are Alexander and Louis. The former is the male version of Her Majesty’s middle name, which is Alexandra, and the latter is in honor of Prince Philip’s uncle, Louis Mountbatten.
William and Middleton’s youngest child, Prince Louis Arthur Charles, shares two of his names with his older brother and a middle name with his grandpa, Prince Charles.
