Karl Pilkington, 46, was born in Manchester.
After leaving school at 15 his first job was pressing CDs for the band Smokey.
He went on to work in radio and first met Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant while working as Head Of Production at London's XFM.
He found fame as the producer of Ricky and Stephen's comedy radio show – The Ricky Gervais Show.
At first he just made the odd comment or observation but gradually his popularity grew and he earned a bigger part in the show.
In 2005 he stood in for Nemone and co-presented two BBC 6 Music shows with Russell Brand.
