Who is Chris Packham? Springwatch presenter and The Really Wild Show host who has Asperger syndrome

Here is everything you need to know about everyone's favourite naturalist…

Who is Chris Packham?

Chris Packham, 57, is a well-known TV presenter, nature photographer and naturalist.

He developed his passion for the great outdoors after he got a degree from the University of Southampton in Zoology.

Chris got his first big break in 1986 when he worked on kids nature programme The Really Wild Show, which ran until 1995.

He's now a well-known personality for hosting Springwatch, which he has done for eight years, and has had many scientific papers published alongside his work.

The presenter caused controversy when he shocked cancer patients in 2014 by declaring research cash should be diverted to wildlife instead.

Why was Chris Packham arrested?

The BBC wildlife presenter was charged with assault after getting into a flap with bird hunters in Malta but has since been cleared of the charges.

The Springwatch star was arrested after confronting trappers who accused him of attacking them — which he strongly denied.

Posting a video from a police station in the town of Gozo on Tuesday, April 18, the TV twitcher fumed: "I have just spent the last two hours in this police station after we were instructed to come back here by the police.

"This is because two trappers who were present at the time claimed that I had assaulted them.

"I am completely innocent of these charges.

"Not only was I a victim of being pushed around but I was then pushed all the way up the street by a policeman."

Chris appeared in court on Thursday, April 20 and tweeted afterwards saying: "'NOT GUILTY! And wait until you see our evidence…"

When did Chris Packham start hosting Springwatch?

Chris started to front the popular BBC wildlife series in 2008, joining hosts Kate Humble and Simon King.

Chris had replaced Bill Oddie, who had been with the show since its conception in 2005.

He has also gone on to co-host its sister programmes Autumnwatch and Winterwatch – with presenters Gillian Burke, Michaela Strachan and Martin Hughes-Games.

What do we know about Chris Packham’s personal life?

As the name hints, Chris is the brother of fashion designer Jenny Packham.

The TV host currently resides in New Forest with his long-term girlfriend Charlotte Corney, who owns the Isle of Wight Zoo.

The couple has a pet poodle called Scratchy.

In 2016, Chris revealed he had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and has spoken of how he's suffered from severe depression in the past.

He has written a book called Fingers in the Sparkle jar where he reveals how his autism has proved a challenge throughout his life.

When did Chris Packham work on Me and My Dog?

Chris hosted Me and My Dog: The Ultimate Contest which was a new four-part series on BBC Two.

The heartwarming programme showcased eight humans and their canine friends who were tasked with proving they have the best relationship.

Facing testing Lake District terrain, the race saw the duos bond as they learn to trust each other more and start to listen to the other.

The test lasts for ten days, where in the final episode one dog and their owner was crowned the winner of the show.

The first episode of Me and My Dog: The Ultimate Contest aired on Wednesday, April 5 at 8 pm on BBC2.

Chris has considered killing himself twice due to his dogs dying but revealed it was his new pet poodles – Itchy and Scratchy – that saved him from carrying out the bid.

Sadly Itchy passed away before Christmas aged 14 from prostate cancer, and Chris revealed he struggled so much that he has kept Itchy's body in the freezer.
