What is Alan Sugar’s net worth, how old is The Apprentice boss and who is his wife?

He's about to be put back in charge of a whole new batch of egotistical and power-hungry candidates in The Apprentice 2018 – here's the lowdown on him…

How old is Lord Sugar and what's his net worth?

Alan Michael Sugar was born 24 March 1947, in Hackney, East London.

The 71-year-old married Ann Simons, the aunt of former EastEnders star Rita Simons, on April 28, 1968, and the two recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary together.

In 2016, The Sunday Times Rich List estimated Lord Sugar's net worth at £1.15billion.

This makes him the 95th richest person in the UK.

Lord Sugar donates his fees for his work on The Apprentice to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

What businesses has he owned?

The business mogul has earned his money through a string of business ventures, most notably founding Amstrad, a computer and electronics company, in 1968.

At the height of its success, Amstrad alone was worth an estimated £1.2billion, however, it was sold in 2007 to BSkyB for £125million.

On top of this, he runs Amsprop alongside his son, Daniel Sugar, who acts as MD for Amsprop Estates.

The company invests in commercial property across London and Essex and has since sold on some of their portfolios to other investors for a significant profit.

In 2015, the firm sold Burberry's Haymarket flagship store location on for more than double the price – cashing in a £65million cheque on a property that cost them £31.5million.

What controversial tweet did Lord Sugar post?

On June 20, 2018, Lord Sugar sparked outrage when he compared the Senegal football team to Marbella beach touts.

He was slammed after he posted a picture of the Senegal team on Twitter along with the caption: "I recognise some of these guys from the beach in Marbella. Multitasking resourceful chaps."

He even mocked up images of sunglasses and bags in front of the Senegalese footballers, who beat Poland 2-1 in their opening World Cup match.

After a storm of criticism on social media, Lord Sugar removed the offending tweet – which he claimed was "funny".

When was Lord Sugar chairman of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

Lord Sugar was chairman of Tottenham Hotspur from 1991 to 2001.

An avid supporter of the team, Sugar teamed up with Terry Venables to buy the club to help bail it out of financial troubles.

However, two years later Sugar sacked Venables and later won a legal battle against him when the former footballer appealed to the high courts.

The move was unpopular among fans, who felt he was treating the club as a business rather than a passion project.

In 2001, he sold the majority stake of his shares for an estimated £22million, before selling the rest six years later for £25million.

He branded his sixteen-year investment in the club as a "waste of his life".

When does The Apprentice start on BBC One?

The Apprentice is a hit BBC reality show, now going into its 14th series, featuring hour-long episodes.

Each series of the programme aims to find a new apprentice for billionaire business mogul and Amstrad founder Lord Alan Sugar, who's worth £1.4bn.

It aims to recreate the toughest of business environments and tasks for its set of contestants, but it is often very funny due to the incompetence and arrogance of the competitors.

It launched on BBC One on Wednesday, October 3.
